I. Work Experience1 工作中遇到最困难的事情,如何克服它?My major in the university is Finance. It is very useful for my work. But, little by little, I found in the work that I need to learn more knowledge on accounting because financial analysis is the key factor in analysis. So, in May 96, I joined Accounting Dept. of *** College of Finance and Economics to start my study as a graduate student. Although it is very hard to keep studying while working at the same time, I never gave up my study and finally I got Master’s degree successfully. The knowledge really helps me a lot in the work.2. How does this knowledge help you in the work?Financial analysis is very important in the work. The subjects, such as auditing, financial accounting and financial management give me direct help when I analyse the financial information of the clients.3 描述一下你这几年来的所从事的工作?What are your duties as a credit analyst?/What do you do as a credit analyst?/What are you responsible for as a credit analyst?/What does your department do?From 7/94 to 8/96, I has been working in Financial Dept. of *** Jinze Industrial Co Ltd as an Investment Analyst. The company is an investment company owned by *** Municipal Government. (The government makes direct investment through Jinze company.). All of our clients are state-owned enterprises. In my work, first, we get from the government the information of the enterprises that have financing requirement. The Economy Committee of the government has profile of every state-owned enterprise. We can get general information about these enterprises, such as history of the company, main activity, location, list of management etc. We also need to visit the enterprises to get first hand information, such as the financial situation, production process, management, feasibility of the projects needs financing etc. Then we analyse the information collected and make investment advice to management and the government.(for example, when we do financial analysis we should check if the company is earning money, do they have a strong equity base, is the balance sheet structure is healthy, how about the liquidity of the assets; another example, I always check is there any delay on the construction of the project. what is the reason for the delay? Is it for technology difficulties or is there any problem on the construction materials. How will the company solve it and so on.)(Next step, other department in Jinze will follow up the decision made by the management and the government. ) (Dept. in Jinze: Financial Dept., Investment Dept. (They follow up the whole procedures of injecting money, to make capital verification etc.), Law affairs Dept., Administration Dept., Computer Dept.)(difference: 1) Most of clients of *** are multinationals, while Jinze’s clients are state owned enterprises 2) *** makes loans to the clients and Jinze makes directs investment into the enterprises. Jinze will hold shares of the enterprises after investment. )I was employed by *** *** Branch in Aug. 96 as a credit analyst. Most of our clients are foreign firms or joint ventures. In ***, when I learn that a potential client has banking requirement, I will first arrange a meeting with its financial controller to get some first hand information, such as financial statements for the past 3 years, financial projections, production capacity and process, market share and competition, marketing organization etc. At the same time, I will contact *** H.O. in *** or other branches that have relationship with the group to learn their credit and ***’s policy on this group (policy means whether we have a positive attitude towards this group). Then I will do analysis on the information collected. For example, from financial statements, we can learn the company’s profitability, balance sheet structure and liquidity of the assets,. Regarding the financial projection, we usually check whether the projection is reasonable for the company. Is it possible for the company to realize this projection. Regarding the activity, is there any problem on the collection of a/c receivable, is there any risk on foreign exchange, does the company rely too much on export to those countries that have economic crisis and so on.Then I will prepare my credit proposal and submit to our head office to seek their approval. After we got approval, we usually review the financial situation of the client about every semester, and review its whole performance annually or whenever we get news on the problem of the company.(For example, when we do financial analysis, we always ask the clients to provide us with the financial statements for the past 3 fiscal years. Then we transpose the financial statements into ***’s comparative spreadsheets. I bring with me a spreadsheet I made last month on one of my clients. We usually analyse 3 aspects of the financials, income statements, balance sheet structure and liquidity of the assets. )(check is there any improvement on total sales and net profit, meanwhile, profit margins are very useful signal. For example, when the gross profit margin decreased as of end of last fiscal year, it might because the selling prices dropped last year caused by the keen competition, or price of raw materials increased last year. )In Oct. 98, I was promoted to be Manager of Credit Analysis. In this position, besides the work of a credit analyst, I also supervise the work of 4 other credit analysts, to organize the workflow, including planning, placement and training; to control and monitor credit analyst’s performance to comply with policies and procedures of the Bank.I report to the deputy general manager.3. Why don’t you ask your deputy general manager to write reference letter for you? How does Francis Liu know about your work? Our DGM is in *** now. He should have returned in early Sep. But there are some change on his schedule. Besides our DGM, Francis is the other person in our bank that knows me and my work very well. Credit Dept. is divided into two sections, credit analysis and loan administration and security. I am the head of credit analysis and Francis is the head of the other section. Both of us should have meeting with our DGM once a week. First I need to report to the DGM the work we are doing and second I should advice Francis the progress of our analysis so that they can have time to prepare for following up.(For example, after we send our credit proposal to the H.O. Some time later, we can receive approval from H.O. Then Francis should arrange to issue loan agreement, to collect legal documents from the clients, such as business license, board resolution, article of association, specimen signature card etc. And then they will follow up downing money of the client, their repayment and collection of overdue loans etc. )(For our section, after we receive approval from the H.O. it doesn’t mean our work on the client has been finished. We usually review the financial information of the client every semester and review their whole performance annually or at any time when we get news on the problem of the company. )4. What kind of projects did you work on? Describe for a little bit about those projects. What did you do in the work. Some of my clients are within the top 500 groups in the world, including Carrefour, Nestle, BASF, Rhone-Poulenc, Dumez, Phillip Holzmann, Otis, Michelin and so on.For a new client, when I learn a company has banking requirement, I will first arrange a meeting with its financial controller to get some first hand information, such as financial reports for the past 3 years, financial projections, production capacity and process, marketing organization, market share and competition etc. At the same time, I will contact *** *** or other branches that have relationship with the group to learn their credit and ***’s policy on this company (policy means whether we have a positive attitude towards this group). Then I will do analysis on the information collected. On the financials, we usually assess the profitability, balance sheet structure and liquidity. On financial projection, we usually check whether the budget is reasonable for the company. Is it possible for the company to realize the budget. Then I will submit my credit proposal to seek approval of our head office. After I get approval from the H.O., I need to review its financials every semester, to review its whole performance annually or whenever we got news on the problem of the company.Carrefour is a French hypermarket group, it has one store in *** and one in Shenyang city. Both of them are my clients. We granted USD12 mio line for both of them respectively.Nestle has 2 subsidiaries in ***, 2 in Qingdao and one in Helongjiang. So we set up a globe line covering these 5 companies in early 1997.BASF is a German Chemical group. In the magzine Fortune it ranks 78 in terms of total sales last year. In Shenyang the group has a pharmaceutical subsidiary. We granted them a USD7.5 mio 3-years line last year.Rhone-Poulenc is a French pharmaceutical group. For example, I have a client. in early 98, I learned that one of the group’s subsidiaries in north China had banking requirement, then I arranged a meeting with the treasury in its China group and another meeting with the financial control of the subsidiary. I got some first hand information, such as financial statements for the past 3 years, main products, production capacity and process, marketing organization etc. Other the other hand, I contacted our head office and other branches that have relationship with the group to learn the credit of the group and the relationship between our 2 groups and to learn ***’s policy on this group. Then I began my analysis. This is a pharmaceutical company producing vitamins for animal feed. From the financial reports, I found that the company had continuous profit in the past 3 years. Its balance sheet structure and liquidity were healthy. Its financial projections for the coming 3 years are reasonable and possible to be realized. Meanwhile, I found its parent in Germany gave strong support to the subsidiary. The parent company supplied key materials to the company on favorable pricing. From *** ***, I learned the parent is the largest producer of that materials. This will give the company more advantages than its competitors. So I proposed to the management and *** *** to set up relationship with this company. Soon, I received approval from the H.O. and a USD7.5 mio 3-Year loan agreement was signed by our 2 parties. *** *** is the first branch in China that set up relationship with the group. Basing on this trouble free cooperation, our Shanghai branch set up relationship with 2 companies of the group in Shanghai soon after.4. Please describe how do you make analysis on a client?First, according to ***’s strategy in China, I need to determine whether we should consider lending money to the industry. For ***, we do not lend money to certain industries, e.g. real estate.Second, I will do further analysis on the company, including analyses its background, financial statements and projections, market and competition, activities, management, and macro economic environment, government policy and related regulation, foreign exchange risk, etc. Based on the analysis, I will determine whether I will recommend this case to the management.Third, according to my analysis and security provided by the client, I will discuss with management on the terms and conditions adopted on this client and then prepare credit proposal to be submitted to H.O.(After we got the approval from H.O., the case will be followed up by the other section of Credit Dept. They will issue loan agreement, collect legal documents, administrate and control the loan account of the client (including drawdown, repayment, collection of overdue loans and so on.)4 Is all your advice` accepted by the management? Give me some example?Generally, the management seldom refuse my advice. But, they may make some amendment on the terms and conditions given to the clients, e.g. to increase the pricing, to request a stronger security.Have you refused loan request of any clients? Why?Yes.1) According to the loan strategy of our Head Office, generally, we do not make loans to companies in certain industries, e.g. real estate.2) According to our analysis, some industries are considered to have bad future, because of keen competition. For example, two-pieces aluminum can for beverage and beer, from 1997, price of two pieces cans has been decreasing, because more and more new comers entered into this industry So, from the end of 1997, we are cautious of making loans to companies in this industry.3) Some companies are seriously affected by the Financial Crisis in South East Asia. Such as some Korean and Japanese companies and some companies rely too much on export to countries in this area. For these companies, we are reluctant to grant facility.3. How many people are there in your department? How many people do you supervise? There are 9 people in Credit Dept. I supervise 4 Credit Analyst. There are 4 staffs in charge of loan administration and security.3. Your job is more like a Credit Manager.Actually, in our bank, Credit Dept. is divided into 2 sections: one is Credit Analysis, the other is Loan Administration and Security. They are mainly in charge of control and administration of activities of loan accounts, such as drawdown, repayment, collection of overdue loans. They are also in charge of works related to legal documents, e.g. preparation of loan agreement, bank guarantee and collection of legal documents from the clients, such as business license, board resolution etc. I think the work of this section is more like that of credit manager. But as a credit analyst, I concentrate more on analyzing the risk of our lending business.4. describe your work in a typical dayI start my work at 9 o’clock in the morning. I usually first open my computer to check the mail box, where I can find the instruction of the management and mails from the clients or from other branches. Then I allot the works to the Credit Analysts. Every Credit Analyst is in charge of certain clients, so I will give them the work related to their clients. After that, I will do analysis on my own clients. During that, I may need to have meeting with the clients or contact other branches or check Seccom to collect the information I need. Seccom is the information sharing system in *** intranet. Sometimes, I need to discuss with the Credit Analysts about the problem they have.Once a week I need to have a meeting with the DGM and the manager of Loan Administration, the other section of Credit Dept. In the meeting, we report to the DGM the work we are doing, and I will inform the manager of the other section the progress of our analysis so that they can have time to prepare for following up.Our work ends at 6 p.m. Generally, I always work overtime.5.
